Signs Your Pet May Need Orthopedic Care

Orthopedic pain affects the bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments that help pets move comfortably. In dogs and cats, this kind of pain is not always obvious. Some pets limp or suddenly stop using a leg, but others show quieter changes, like slowing down, hiding more, or hesitating before jumping.

Because pets often hide discomfort, small changes in movement, posture, or behavior can be important clues.

Common Signs of Orthopedic Pain in Dogs and Cats

Your pet may be experiencing orthopedic pain if you notice:

  • Limping or favoring one leg
  • Stiffness after resting
  • Difficulty getting up or lying down
  • Reluctance to jump, climb stairs, or get into the car
  • Slowing down on walks or during play
  • Holding a leg up
  • Swelling around a joint or limb
  • Licking or chewing at one area
  • Sitting off to one side, standing, or walking differently than usual
  • Shaking, whining, hiding, or acting more withdrawn
  • Irritability when touched or picked up
  • Loss of muscle in one leg over time

Cats may show pain more subtly than dogs. A cat with orthopedic pain may stop jumping onto counters, avoid stairs, sleep in lower places, use the litter box differently, or become less social.

When to Seek Veterinary Care

Seek veterinary care right away if your pet cannot put weight on a leg, has a limb that looks bent or out of place, has sudden swelling, cries out in pain, was injured in a fall or accident, or suddenly seems weak, wobbly, or unable to walk normally.

If the signs are mild but last more than a day or two, keep coming back, or get worse with activity, schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Orthopedic problems are often easier to treat when they are identified early, before pain worsens or your pet changes how they move to compensate.

How Orthopedic Care Can Help

Orthopedic care can help identify whether your pet’s discomfort is coming from a bone, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle, or other part of the musculoskeletal system. Depending on the cause, your pet’s care plan may include pain management, rest, rehabilitation, imaging, or surgery.

At DoveLewis, our orthopedic surgery team helps dogs and cats with injuries and conditions that affect how they move, including broken bones, knee injuries, kneecap problems, and joint pain. We work with families and primary veterinarians to understand what’s causing the problem and talk through the best options to help each pet feel and move better.
