Meet Wren

dog

One-year-old Wheaten Terrier, Wren, went from being a healthy dog to lethargic and uncomfortable in the span of a few days. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Wren got really sick and was taken to a local clinic where they quickly realized something was seriously wrong after some blood tests. Wren was brought to DoveLewis where she was diagnosed with Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). IMHA is an autoimmune disease in dogs in which the body attacks its own red blood cells, leading to very low red blood cell counts that require multiple blood transfusions.

To date, Wren has received 8 units of canine blood from blood donor superheroes, Chloe, Kashi, Venice, and Yara, and her disease is stabilizing. Without canine blood donors, Wren wouldn’t still be here. Four different dogs (we call them superheroes) have donated blood that was used to support Wren’s care.

Meet Todd

stray dog

The Stray and Lost Animal Program’s mission is to be a safe haven for all sick or injured lost pets and stray companion animals like Todd. Todd was discovered by a good Samaritan in SE Portland and was brought to DoveLewis because he was limping on his hind leg. It was believed he had a fractured leg and would need to have his leg amputated. Todd spent Halloween weekend at DoveLewis where he got pain medication and cuddles before he was transferred to Multnomah County Animal Services. During his stay, he captured the heart of Dr. Sarah Tauber who ultimately adopted him. Dr. Tauber took over Todd’s care and helped him in his recovery. Today, Todd is a happy little pup and fits right in with his family!

DoveLewis experienced a 52% increase in the number of animals needing care last summer and we need your help so we can continue to make a difference for them.

Wildlife Program

DoveLewis’ mission is to care for every animal and every person who cares for them. Always. And that most certainly includes wildlife. Over the last 5 years, the hospital has experienced an over 50% increase in the number of wildlife brought to DoveLewis. Good Samaritans and first responders bring thousands of injured or ill wild animals to DoveLewis every year in need of medical attention. With generous donations from local animal lovers, DoveLewis’ team stabilizes the animals and Portland Audubon supports their recovery and release.

With the recent temporary closure of the Portland Audubon’s Wildlife Sanctuary at the end of December, DoveLewis has experienced a significant increase in the number of Wildlife patients needing help. Donations from the community make this care possible!
