DoveLewis Announces New Chief Medical Officer

DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital recently welcomed a new chief medical officer, Shana O’Marra, DVM, DACVECC.

With extensive experience in emergency and critical care, including roles as medical director, residency training supervisor, blood bank director and senior on-call surgeon, Dr. O’Marra joins DoveLewis and the Oregon veterinary community with a history of exceptional leadership and a vision for the future.

“Her determination to make a difference sets Dr. O’Marra apart,” said DoveLewis President and CEO Ron Morgan. “She’s leading cutting-edge efforts, and I have no doubt that she will help us continue to move forward.”

Dr. O’Marra succeeds previous CMO Dr. Lee Herold, who, after eight years of energetic leadership, is eagerly returning to her role as a full-time criticalist in the ER and ICU at DoveLewis.

Dr. O’Marra received her doctorate of veterinary medicine at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her internship at the VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver, Colorado, and returned to Tufts for her emergency and critical care residency.

Her natural leadership has positioned her as a champion of advancing the field of veterinary medicine – and not just in patient care. With her roots in education and mentorship in private practice, Dr. O’Marra recognizes the need for professional support and open discussion about the unique stressors in veterinary medicine. Dr. O’Marra is an advocate for Balint-style case discussions, a practice that considers the impact a case has on the attending staff. This process offers a way for veterinary professionals to honor the importance of the human-animal bond on the hospital floor, as well as examine the relationships between the attending veterinary staff, their patients and the pet owners.

Dr. O’Marra’s other professional interests include immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, coagulation, sepsis, fluid resuscitation and CPR.

“Her level of commitment to veterinary medicine exemplifies the DoveLewis mission to help our community’s animals, the people who love them, and the veterinary professionals who care for them,” said Morgan.
