Therapy Dogs Bring Holiday Cheer and Comfort to Communities in Need

DoveLewis’ canine therapy teams visit the airport, transitional housing, and at-risk youth for the holidays.

PORTLAND, Ore. – DoveLewis’ revered Portland Area Canine Therapy Teams (PACTT) are poised to embark on visits to diverse community organizations, aiming to uplift spirits and offer much-needed comfort during the holiday season.

“During this time of year, our therapy dogs have a remarkable ability to make a meaningful impact," expressed Kathy Loter, DoveLewis’ PACTT Program Director. "Whether it's at the Portland airport, where they effortlessly connect with travelers navigating the stresses of the holidays, or in facilities supporting at-risk youth, our dogs bring an invaluable sense of calm and support."

Canine-assisted therapy has been proven to promote physical healing by reducing anxiety, stress, fatigue, and depression. Celebrating its 10th anniversary and being this year's honoree of the FBI’s prestigious Director’s Community Leadership Award, PACTT proudly showcases 84 dedicated teams that collectively contributed 12,000 hours of volunteer service this last year. Teams are made up of a committed handler and a career-change or retired guide dog who will visit over 20 facilities in the area including at-risk youth facilities, county courts, transitional housing, Portland Police, and OHSU.
