Fancy’s Story: Hit by a Bus, Saved by Surgery

Fancy’s life changed in an instant when she was hit by a bus. The accident left her with a severe degloving injury to her left hind leg — a wound that exposed bone and joint tissue and threatened her ability to heal.

dog in leg cast at emergency animal hospitalBecause her injuries were so extensive, a local clinic referred her to DoveLewis for advanced wound management and surgical evaluation.

Our surgery team carefully evaluated Fancy’s injury. Her wound involved significant soft tissue loss, open fractures, and exposed bone and joint tissue — damage that simply couldn’t heal with bandages and time alone. The risks were serious: ongoing pain, infection, and long-term loss of function.

We spoke with Fancy’s family, listened to their concerns, and walked them through what the surgery would mean. After reviewing all the options, we recommended amputation as the most humane way to give Fancy the best chance at a comfortable life.

Fancy underwent a left hind limb amputation. The procedure went smoothly, and our ICU team stayed by her side throughout recovery. Within days, Fancy began to show the resilience that makes pets so remarkable. She started eating again, her incision healed well, and she began adapting to life on three legs.

The decision to pursue surgery is never easy. But for Fancy and her family, it became the turning point. Surgery gave her the chance to heal in comfort — and it gave her family the reassurance that she could still have a happy life. Today, Fancy is learning to thrive again, and her family is right there with her.
