Volunteer Opportunities

Dove Lewis
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with DoveLewis! Every minute you spend helping us is one more minute we can spend helping our patients and developing our community programs.

DoveLewis specializes in emergency and critical care medicine and does not offer volunteer opportunities on the hospital floor or with our animal patients. There are still many ways you can support us!

DoveLewis volunteers must:

  • take a tour of DoveLewis hospital
  • attend a New Volunteer Orientation
  • be at least 18 years old or 16-17 years old and accompanied by a parent

Office Support
With over 100 staff, DoveLewis has a big need for administrative support. Volunteers with strong office skills can help out Business and Programs staff in a variety of ways: filing donation paperwork, assembling mailings, making reminder phone calls, performing data entry, and more. Most office work is done between the hours of 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some phone calls can be made from home.

Filing Volunteer
Our filing volunteer comes in once/week to ensure filing is taken care of. You will be organizing files alphabetically or by batch number and filing them in filing cabinets. A time commitment of one hour/week is required.

Business and Programs Receptionist
The receptionist will meet and greet guests coming to the Business and Programs area of the hospital as well as perform administrative tasks as needed. Shifts will be in 3 or 6 hour blocks Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Volunteers receptionists must be friendly, outgoing, and personable and must make a commitment to volunteer at least two shifts/month.

Clinic Liaison
DoveLewis has brochures in over 200 veterinary facilities around the Portland metro area. They are largely distributed by volunteers who drop them on their way home from work or school. Help DoveLewis develop and maintain positive relationships with local veterinary facilities by becoming a Clinic Liaison! You will be assigned a specific geographic area and deliver DoveLewis materials - magnets, brochures, etc. - when needed. Reliable transportation is required and volunteers typically spend between 1 -3 hours/month in this role.

On-call Animal Transport Facilitator
Many strays are brought to DoveLewis every year by good Samaritans and county officers. After these animals are treated, we need help shuttling them to the county or one of the other shelters in the area e.g the Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood. Facilitators must have reliable transportation and a daytime telephone number and/or e-mail. This is an “on-call” volunteer position as the number of animals in need of shuttling varies from month to month.

Donation Jar Facilitator
We need help distributing donation jars and collecting funds in already placed jars throughout the community. Collectors should have reliable transportation, a daytime telephone number and/or e-mail. This is an on-call position as the number of donation jars varies month by month.

Brochure Delivery
When a veterinary clinic doesn’t have a Clinic Liaison assigned to it, we need volunteers who are willing to drop off brochures. Brochure volunteers will pick up a bundle of brochures and deliver them within one week. Reliable transportation is required.

Holiday Food
Our Hospital staff works around the clock everyday, even on holidays. Show your appreciation by bringing them food and homemade goodies on holidays. Staff typically prefer finger food or items that can be eaten quickly. Popular food items include: cheese and crackers, chips and dip, veggie tray with dip, fruit platters, sandwiches, holiday themed food (turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, pumpkin pie, etc.)

Holidays include:

New Year’s Day
Labor Day
Easter Sunday
Thanksgiving
Memorial Day
Christmas
Fourth of July
New Year’s Eve
