Since 2009, Joanie has performed several roles as a certified technician at DoveLewis. As her interest in transfusion medicine developed over the years, Joanie was a perfect fit to manage the DoveLewis Blood Bank. She now manages more than 150 blood donors and works closely with our ER and ICU staff to provide blood products for animals in critical condition.
At a young age, Joanie saw the tremendous impact that veterinarians had on her animals, and she knew that veterinary medicine was a potential career path. When her cat, Zach, was diagnosed with cancer, she spent hours researching his condition. Caring for her furry friend was the final inspiration she needed to apply to a technician program.
A memorable case
"The most exciting case that I have been involved with at DoveLewis was a little bichon frise that was attacked by a pack of rottweilers. She had degloving wounds and lacerations covering about 70 percent of her body. I had never seen so much damage. But thanks to our wonderful team and many hours in surgery, we were able to piece her back together. I have seen her a few times since the initial attack, and it's still hard to believe that it's the same dog. Her recovery was amazing."
