DoveLewis Community Support
People in the community often ask us “How can we help support the animals at DoveLewis?” They have read stories about the emergency and ICU animal care provided by DoveLewis, and they want to get involved to help the animals!
Here are some suggestions for individuals
or groups to help the animals at DoveLewis!
Toys and Treats Drive
Humans aren’t the only ones who need blood transfusions in emergencies. The DoveLewis Blood Bank provides enough blood and plasma every year for more than 1000 transfusions for dogs and cats. Veterinarians throughout the Portland–Metropolitan area use DoveLewis Blood products for their patients too. With approximately 300 volunteer donors in our program, the DoveLewis Blood Bank is one of the largest community–based animal blood banks in the nation. We call our blood donors “Superheroes”! With each donation, a Blood Donor Superhero gets lots of doggie biscuits, and then the chance to pick out a new toy! With our blood donors coming in on average four times a year, that adds up to 1200 toys and 1200+ treats! Our Superheroes love toys and treats! We prefer treats that can be broken into small pieces if necessary, and treats that our Superheroes can eat while they're here 'on the job.' (Please no doggy rawhide treats that take longer to eat).
Towel and Blanket Donations
Our washing machines at DoveLewis are almost always running! We can always
use towel and blanket donations for the animals at DoveLewis. The towels and blankets should be clean, in good condition, with no major stains, and no holes or frayed edges. We can use washcloths, hand towels, and bath towels. We can also use any size blanket, quilt, or comforter cover.
Baby Food Donations
Sometimes the animals who have just had surgery or are recovering from any number of diseases don’t want to eat—so we can use baby food to get them started eating and interested in food. The advantage is that baby food is very bland, and thus usually easily tolerated by cats and dogs. Please note: We can offer our patients only meat-based baby food (no baby food with vegetables, onion, garlic, etc. please). The best baby food flavors are beef, chicken, turkey and lamb. Thank you in advance for your consideration!

Donation Jars
Placing an attractive donation jar at the cash register of your place of business is a terrific method for making your customers aware of DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital, our campaign for a new hospital and involving them in supporting our vital programs and services. Jars are currently available by contacting Candice Coleman at 503.535.3384.
Throughout the years, DoveLewis supporters have come up with fun, creative ways to raise money for us. Here are some of the most recent examples:
- One volunteer organized her own garage sale, netting nearly $1,000 for our Stray Animal and Wildlife program.
- Regency Park Assisted Living is one of the many places where our Animal Assisted Therapy & Education teams visit. To thank us for all of the smiles we bring to their residents, they held a hot dog sale and donated the money to DoveLewis.
- A couple who were about to be married lost their beloved dog Paco, just before their wedding. After reading our Wish List in a newsletter, they generously asked their guests not to buy them gifts, and to instead donate to DoveLewis for a video endoscope. Our doctors use it so often, they can't imagine what it would be like not having it.
These little girls had a lemonade sale and gave the proceeds to DoveLewis. Their dog, Harry, is one of our Canine Blood Donors.
- An eight year old boy was saving up for an X-Box, but after seeing a story on the news about an abused animal, he chose to give the money to our Charlie Fund for abused animals.
- Several schools organize fundraisers, as well as toy drives. Each DoveLewis Canine Blood Donor gets to go home with a new toy (they pick it out of the box themselves) every time they donate blood.
If you organize a fundraiser, we want to hear about it! Contact Lori Warner-McGee at 503.535.3382.
