The DoveLewis 24 hour Pet Loss Support Message Line

Since its inception in 1988, the DoveLewis 24- hour message line has provided support for a great many people grieving the loss or anticipated loss of a beloved animal companion.

The message line receives an average of five phone messages per day. People often call grief stricken over the death of a beloved pet. The History of the DoveLewis Pet Loss Support Program

I am often asked how I am came into working in grief support for pet owners. The idea to form this group came to me in 1985 when I was a graduate student at Portland State University’s Masters in Social Work program. I was doing a field placement at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kaiser Hospital. It was there that I began my specialty in Grief Work.
