Sustainability at Work in Portland

At DoveLewis Green is More than Just the Color of our Logo!

DoveLewis has been committed to the health and well-being of your pets for over four decades. But did you know we are also doing all we can to contribute to the health and well-being of people and the planet? Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible. We were really pleased to have achieved the Silver Certification in the past from Sustainability at Work, which is part of the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. So pleased, that we decided to go for gold.

At the beginning of 2015, DoveLewis received the Gold Certification. A business must accomplish 45 sustainable actions, in order to reach this level of certification. Our newly achieved actions include an electronic record keeping process, including e-faxing and emailing of records, and our current SHARPS & medical waste disposal.

DoveLewis partners with medical waste disposal company, Critical Care Biorecovery. They are a small company based in the Portland metro area. With their help, all of DoveLewis’ medical waste is collected, incinerated and turned into renewable energy. This energy is then used to create electricity for approximately 45,000 homes in Marion County; nothing goes into landfills.

DoveLewis strives to uphold an unwavering standard for corporate social responsibility (CSR). In CSR, not only is the environmental impact evaluated, but also the social impact of our practices. We provide vital services through our community programs such as Portland Area Canine Therapy Teams (PACTT), the Charlie Fund for abused animals, the Velvet Assistance Fund for low income families facing pet emergencies, the Stray Animal & Wildlife Program, Pet Loss Support Group and the Lost & Found Database.

Our Pet Loss Support Program is extended to the hospital staff to make sure their emotional needs are met after dealing with losses on a regular basis. Some of the other ways we care for our staff are an employee health insurance program, the ability of our employees to bring their animals into the office and flexible schedules so our employees can enjoy time with their families and their pets. Secure bicycle lock-up and shower facilities help our employees make their own personal commitments to their health and that of the environment possible.
